Living Without Labels

The evolutionary dance of personal development is like a tango between our Limited personal identity and our Expanded impersonal Self. On one hand, we seek the safety of personal identity and on the other, we seek the unlimitedness of our true Self. The struggle to decide who should lead this dance is real and unavoidable.

From an early age we are conditioned to constantly seek and find safety in labels outside of ourselves – whether in the form of titles, personas, beliefs or systems. Through the job title we hold, the position we occupy, specific personality traits we adhere to or beliefs we defend, we can feel in control of our inner world and consequently of our reality. I am an introvert. I am a lawyer. I am a wife or a husband. I am an enneagram 9. I am a Pieces. I am a light worker. I am a healer. We seek to be the first, the best, the biggest. Through labels, I know who I am and I can know who you are.

To pigeonhole makes us feel safe. Personal identifications give a sense of power and control over our inner and outer world, they allow us to believe we can organize and order a disordered and unpredictable world.

On the other hand, everyone has at some point struggled with being put in a box. Everyone has felt the constrain and limitation inherent in any label put on them, of being defined by any belief system. All have felt their deep inner unlimitedness resist any attempt to restrain its truth.

Like a ping pong ball we go through life bouncing back and forth between the two. In times of uncertainty and insecurity we hold on stronger to our labels thinking they can keep us safe. In times of openness and change, we eagerly seek to embrace new ones – believing they can help us find new levels of happiness in life. We feel the suffering when titles are stripped away or labels challenged. The confidence and hope when new ones are adorned.

We will keep bouncing back and forth until we realize the deeper truth that inform this dance; That we are not defined by, limited by or constrained by any identification.

I have always carried the deep truth within that we are never defined or restricted by any label – that being our corporate work title or our any spiritual system we believe hold the truth of our Soul. And I believe that we all carry this truth within. We are all of existence. We are all the stars and all the planets. We are none of it and all of it. We cannot be defined by any external system of belief that claim to hold the secret to our leadership, our manifestation power, our creative gifts, ways of being in the world or seeing the world, how we operate, what we are able to do, or that claims to know our path in life.

The journey of awakening requires us to slowly let go of all our personal identifications and attachments and allow for this deeper truth to take over our mind and body. The fear of stepping into the full realization is real, so we need these labels until we are safe enough within ourselves to stand without them. If we choose to seek our true Self, it means that we for many years have to float in the discomfort of a blind state of identity – knowing the truth of the natural unlimitedness we carry within, but not fully able to claim that truth for ourself. As we slowly bring our separated parts back into the wholeness of our true natural state, we put together faith and trust in our true expansive, unlimited Self.

As we step by step let go of the comfort of personal identifications, we become shape shifters that are able to meet what the moment calls for. Letting go of identification allow us to invent new ways and more swiftly embrace possibility and change. We become conduits of the Higher Intelligence that inspire our Service to humanity. If we can trust and flow with the state of unlimitedness, Divine intelligence will flow out of us. When we dare say I trust in all that I am, then we become truly free.
